Step Beyond is about what happens next. It is a structured six month pathway for young people who are ready to move towards work and adult life, and who need the right support to make that move stick.
What it involves
A 6 month transition to adulthood pathway including mentoring, work experience, employer engagement, travel training and supported internships.
Length: 6 months, tailored to the young person.
The transition from school, college or specialist provision into adulthood can be one of the most challenging periods in a young person’s life.
Many young people want greater independence, employment, further education or training, but may not yet have the confidence, experience or practical skills needed to sustain that next step successfully.
The Step Beyond Programme is designed to bridge that gap. It provides structured preparation for adulthood, combining practical experience with personalised support so that progression is not only achieved, but maintained over time.
What is included
This is not simply a careers programme. It is a holistic transition pathway that helps young people develop the skills, confidence, independence and support networks needed for adult life.
The programme is particularly valuable for young people who have the potential to progress but need consistent guidance, real world opportunities and coordinated support to make that progression sustainable.
- Personalised transition and progression planning
- One to one mentoring throughout
- Careers guidance and employer engagement
- Regular work experience with real businesses
- Job coaching and workplace skills development
- Travel training and independent living skills
- Preparing for Adulthood outcome mapping
- Family support and multi agency meetings
- Supported internship preparation and placement where appropriate
What young people can gain
Young people can work towards recognised transition, employability and vocational awards that provide evidence of their progress and achievements.
By the end of the programme, the aim is for every young person to have a clear and realistic next step, such as:
- Further education
- Vocational training
- Apprenticeship
- Supported internship
- Paid employment
- Another appropriate progression programme
Through early planning, practical experience and sustained support, the programme helps reduce the risk of young people becoming Not in Education, Employment or Training during the critical transition years.
Right now, 18,100 young people with an EHC plan are NEET, and support through an EHC plan runs to age 25. The transition years are where the right help makes the biggest difference.
